3 min read Make Music Day Kenya 2025: Celebrating Music in a Simpler, More Personal Way

Every 21st June, music takes center stage across the world as countries celebrate Make Music Day — a free, global celebration of music in all its forms. Originating in France as Fête de la Musique, this global holiday invites anyone and everyone to make and enjoy music — no matter the style, no matter the skill level.
What’s Happening in Kenya This Year?
In 2025, Make Music Day Kenya takes a more lowkey, localized approach. While past editions have included coordinated, multi-county shows via CASIK venues, this year we’re letting the music breathe naturally.
Creatives and communities are encouraged to celebrate in their own way — from backyard jam sessions to livestream DJ sets. Still, two official gatherings will mark the occasion:
AfroFolk Music Fest – Siaya County
Organized by Muziki Santuri Folk Network, this is a culturally rich World Music Day celebration happening at:
Umala Chief’s Camp, East Alego – Siaya County, Kenya
10:00 AM – 6:00 PM
Entry: FREE
Featured Performers:
- Stephen Jomo (Nyatiti Lyre)
- Owila Odwanya (Nyatiti Lyre)
- Gombe Okumu (Nyatiti Lyre)
- Osogo Winyo Manyako (Dodomusic Women Ensemble)
- Olith Ratego (Modern Afrofolk Fusion)
- Toboa Theatre Group (Folk Comedy)
- Otieno Aloka (Ohangla Traditional)
This festival promises deep roots, indigenous soundscapes, and an incredible blend of traditional folk, Afrofusion, and storytelling.
Nairobi Activation – NIMPA Campus
In the capital, Gigforce, Showbiz Info Ltd, and NIMPA will host the Nairobi edition featuring emerging creatives, visual storytellers, and interactive showcases. Expect:
- Music performances
- Photography & videography showcases
- Peer-to-peer learning moments
- And opportunities to register for creative gigs on Gigforce
Interested performers should contact the teams early or show up and register on-site.
How to Celebrate Wherever You Are
Whether or not you're near Nairobi or Siaya, you can still take part:
- Perform live on your socials
- Host a listening session with friends
- Record a music video or freestyle
- Share a playlist using #MakeMusicDayKenya
It’s about community. About music. About showing up for the culture.
Final Note
Whether you're a singer, producer, poet, instrumentalist, or just a fan — Make Music Day is for you. This year, celebrate in your own voice, in your own style.
